Data is coming home again: Not as a step back, but as progress with Azure Local
For years, we have talked about the journey to the cloud. It was the promise of unlimited scaling, new services, and fewer worries.
The cloud was fast, flexible, and provided access to new services without major upfront investments.
No one would miss the costs and risks of running their own server rooms, with all the headaches that came with it.
It all made perfect sense. Back then.
But the world has changed: External factors such as security and geopolitics have changed the global outlook on data. The new movement we must relate to points back toward the data center—but with new experience and tools in our backpack.
Hybrid Cloud
All the benefits of Azure—but with local control
For years, architectural choices were about optimization by placing workloads where they performed best. It was a technical exercise.
Repatriation is something else.
It is driven by new circumstances that did not exist 5–10 years ago:
- Growing requirements for data locality and jurisdiction
- Geopolitical uncertainty
- Rising cloud costs and pricing that is difficult to understand
- Need for predictability and physical proximity
- Requirements from customers and authorities for demonstrable control
Microsoft architecture on hardware from Dell Technologies
Azure Local runs on Dell hardware and is built on Microsoft’s Azure Stack HCI technology, giving you a fully integrated hybrid cloud solution that brings compute, storage, and networking together in a single cluster—where workloads can run locally with the same management and security models as in Azure. You manage administration in Azure Portal and Windows Admin Center, so you can control governance, updates, and compliance centrally.
Azure Local enables you to run virtual machines, containers, and edge workloads with low latency, while leveraging existing Azure services. Dell delivers preconfigured hardware with automated lifecycle management, making it easy to update firmware, drivers, and OS without complexity.
All the benefits of Azure
Security, automation, integration with Microsoft 365, the environmental challenges we face.
Local control
Compliance, cost, low latency.
One unified platform
Microsoft and Dell Technologies have developed the solution together, and Dell hardware is a Premier Solution recommended by Microsoft.

Compliance & security
There can be many reasons to keep data “in-house”. One may be GDPR compliance, where you cannot always be certain about legislation when data is in the public cloud. Business-critical data and applications are worth their weight in gold—not only to the company itself. Therefore, the platform provides better opportunities to keep sensitive production data in-house.
In addition, you get one unified, supported solution that is easy to maintain with the security updates that are continuously released.
Cost
It is generally more expensive to run applications in the public cloud, and storage costs are also far higher than if they are run locally/in a private cloud. For that reason, it can be advantageous to run demanding workloads locally.
On the other hand, there is strong financial value in using the public cloud to handle, for example, peak-load periods or for development and testing of new services, based on the many services in Azure. Afterwards, they can be “pulled” back home to your own data center.
Low latency
When applications are run locally rather than in a data center hundreds of kilometers away, lower latency is achieved—important in scenarios where fast response times and real-time data are critical to the business. This could be, for example, production environments and IoT solutions, where systems must react instantly to avoid errors or downtime.
In addition, low latency is an advantage for edge computing and applications that run close to the user, e.g., in retail, healthcare, or critical infrastructure. It ensures more stable operations, a better user experience, and the ability for faster automation and data processing.
